CANOE EXPEDITION GREBBELINIE 16KM

Are you up for a challenge? This beautiful canoe trip takes us through the forest, through narrow waterways, past meadows with beautiful estates and along a historical dyke with old bunkers (part of the Grebbe Line). It is the perfect nature getaway. This amazing route is 16 kilometers long. It is a little challenging because we need to take the canoe out of the water a few times to pass the locks that were built in the past to control the water in this area. The route is truly stunning and definitely worth the challenge.

THE “GREBBELINIE”

On our way we’ll pass the Grebbe Line, in Dutch the “Grebbelinie”. It was built in 1745 as a line of defense to protect the Netherlands from invading armies. If an invasion was imminent, parts of the area between Spakenburg and the Grebbeberg in Rhenen could easily be flooded to stop the invading armies. Along the way we can still see the remains of bunkers, forts and casemates. After the Second World War the Grebbe Line was decommissioned and covered with a layer of greenery. More than 40 kilometers of military history is now hidden in a beautiful and elongated nature reserve along the Valleikanaal and the river Eem.
