Finland Winter Wilderness

Vast snow-covered horizons far away from the tourist crowds, husky sledding, the thrill of cross-country skiing, a steamy hot Finnish sauna, snowshoeing, a visit to a reindeer farm and if we are lucky we’ll even see the magical northern lights. Are you ready for a Finnish Wilderness Adventure?

In the north-eastern part of Finland, close to the Russian border, we will find the magnificent wilderness of Hossa National Park. A basic wooden cabin in the middle of the national park, far away from civilization will be our home for the next few days. Boasting zero light pollution and the cleanest air in Europe, this accommodation is the perfect location for a total nature immersion. The Finnish wild taiga offers great circumstances for a total break from the rush of modern life. As soon as you breathe in the pure air and look out to the vast snow-covered horizons your cares will melt away.

Suggested flight: Amsterdam (AMS) → Kajaani (KAJ)

11:45 -> 17:15 (Finnair)

Today we fly to Finland (Kajaani) with a stopover in Helsinki. In Kajaani our guide is already waiting for us. He will take us to our accommodation nestled on the edge of an impressive lake in the wilderness of Hossa National Park (ca. 2 hours). After arrival we will enjoy a delicious Finnish welcome dinner together.

Meals: Welcome dinner

It is time to admire the landscape’s untouched beauty. After a hearty breakfast we will start with an expert-led cross-country ski lesson ( beginners). Cross country skiing is one of the most popular winter hobbies in Finland. After the lesson we will test our new-found skills on a scenic route through the pine forest and over the lakes (various routes for various levels are available).

In the afternoon when the sun fades over the snow, it’s time to take off our skis and head down the road to the local reindeer farm. Here we’ll enjoy a delicious homemade dinner and of course, learn about reindeer herding today.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

This morning we set off for an overnight snowshoeing tour to a hut in the wilderness. After a short introduction we will follow the trail through snow covered pine, spruce and birch forest. The forest is a beautiful winter wonderland, and the silence is like nowhere else. It is more probable that we will meet some reindeer than human beings. Half way our tour we will stop for an outdoor lunch around an open fire.

In the afternoon we arrive at the wilderness cabin where we spend the night. There’s no electricity in the cabin. It is heated by a wood-burning stove and the candle light will guarantee a nice atmosphere. We’ll probably be tired after working our way across the deep snow. Luckily we can relax our muscles and soothe our minds in the lakeside sauna.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

After breakfast we continue our snowshoeing tour through snow white forests, along ridges and over frozen lakes. The forests are home to many animals such as elks, lynxes, hares and brown bears. For years the people have been so afraid of bears that even its name couldn’t be mentioned. But not to worry, we won’t encounter them, during wintertime they are hibernating.

In the afternoon we’ll get back to our accommodation where we’ll have dinner.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Explore this winter wonderland and slice through the trees on the most exhilarating way, on our own sled pulled by 4-6 huskies. After breakfast we are off to a husky farm. Our expert instructor will teach us how to handle the sled before handing over the reins to us so we can head out into the wilderness ourselves.

The dogs’ excitement is infectious and as the animals fall silent on the trail, you will realize that this is the only way to see Finland. Half way our safaris we reach our camp place, where we will have some lunch and drinks by the open fire.

In the evening a delicious farewell dinner will be served.

Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

After breakfast it’s time to bid farewell to this enchanting place and take our transfer to Kajaani airport.

Suggested flight: Kajaani (KAJ) → Amsterdam (AMS)

13:35 -> 18:15 (Finnair)

Meals: breakfast

Please be aware that the itinerary and activities are subject to change. These changes can happen with little notice due to weather, snow conditions or other circumstances beyond our control.

During this week we’ll undertake various activities. None of the activities require previous experience, however a good level of fitness is needed to make the most of this holiday. Walking/ cross country skiing in the soft snow may turn out demanding. The terrain is quite variable with many short up- and down hills but there are no long climbs. The routes go through forests, along ridges and across lakes. The difficulty of the snow shoeing and cross country ski tour is easy to moderate, depending greatly on the snow conditions.

It is essential that everyone has adequate travel insurance. It is also recommend to apply for the European Health Insurance Card which is available free of charge for the citizens of EU/EEA and of Switzerland. The holders of the card are entitled to medical care while staying temporarily in another EU/EEA country or in Switzerland (with same regulations and co-payments like the residents of the country). Having this card helps a lot in the case of accident because without the card you need to pay all the costs on the spot.

More information about the card can be found here: http://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=509&langId=en

Be prepared for cold conditions and make sure you bring many layers of clothing. From December to April the area is deep in snow, offering a long season of winter activities. Therefore it is very important to have a warm coat or a waistcoat to wear during the stops. The best way to protect oneself from the cold is to wear a number of thin layers rather than a few thick ones. The outer garment should be wind proof. Special attention should be paid to the feet, fingers and face.

If needed it is possible to rent a winter overall and snowboots for EUR 40,- (mainly for day 2 and 5).

The trip includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s recommended to bring your own snacks (chocolate, muesli bars etc.) if you want to eat something during the activities or between meals.

In case any special meals (vegetarian, gluten-free etc.) are required please inform us in advance because the meals are pre-ordered!

We are staying 3 nights in a traditional wooden log cabin, far away from civilization in the middle of the beautiful Hossa National Park. Our cabin is situated on the shore of Lake Jatkonjärvi and has a large living room with a fire place. It has 7 bedrooms with shared facilities. Two people will share one bedroom.

During our overnight snowshoe tour we are staying in a wilderness hut without electricity and running water. The water we’ll use is coming from the frozen lake. The hut is heated by a wood burning stove. Here we’ll stay in dorm rooms.

The traditional Finnish sauna is available every evening during this winter wilderness trip (except on arrival day). The sauna is considered to be a holy place where both body and soul are washed. If you want to experience the most traditional custom, combine sauna going and a dip in a hole in the ice. The extreme temperature change really puts your blood circulating and releases many pain-relieving and pleasure hormones.
