FULL MOON WINTER WEEKEND TERSCHELLING
Night owls, star gazers and nature lovers listen up. Were you planning to hibernate through winter or hide yourself indoors during the Valentine’s weekend? We’ve got a great winter weekend at the darkest island of the Netherlands, Terschelling, coming up.
Wander through the woods and over the beach by moonlight, admire the stars from the most stunning spots, or spot local animals in their natural habitat while a ranger of Staatsbosbeheer takes us on a full moon walk. The dark sky and the moon have been a source of wonder ever since humanity has had the capacity to muse about such things. It has served as a source of inspiration for ancient Egyptians, enlightenment scientists, modern artists and poets.
Let’s be amazed by the beauty of the night and explore Terschelling together. An island so dark that it is officially one of the darkest areas of Europe. It even has its own “Dark Sky Park” in the beautiful nature reserve the Boschplaat. A real paradise with lots of birds.
DAY 1: FULL MOON NIGHT WALK
After the ferry has brought us to the island we make a beautiful cycling tour (ca 45 min) to our accommodation on the middle of the island. Once we’ve all checked in we are going for dinner in one of the local restaurants. Make sure you put on your warm clothes because after dinner it is time for our exciting full moon walk with the forester. The moon will guide us while the forester shows us the darkest and most beautiful places of the island. All we need to do is engage our senses, admire the milky way and look for shooting stars.
Meals: no meals included today
DAY 2: WINTER WALK AND MUSICIAN HESSEL
Frost crunching underfoot, countryside crystallised beneath crisp skies, rosy cheeked and steamy breathed – there’s nothing like a good winter walk (10-15KM). On Terschelling you still find purity and unspoilt nature. You can wander along the waterline without encountering anyone. Today’s walk will be a relaxing walk, we’ll take it easy, enjoy nature and visit one of the villages on the island for a nice hot drink.
In the evening we are going for dinner. We are visiting one of the most famous restaurant of the island where Hessel, a local celebrity, and his daughter will be playing some good songs.
Meals: breakfast buffet, packed lunch
DAY 3: BEACHCOMBING ADVENTURE
For centuries, people have scoured the earth’s beaches in a never-ending scavenger hunt. It is always a thrill to look at what the sea has washed ashore. Winter is a great time to search the shores as rough waves churn up the ocean bottom and deliver shells, egg cases and more. Winter storms usually deposit more things on the sand than summer storms, and with fewer people enjoying the winter beach, there is less competition for the beachcombing booty.
Together with the “milieujutter” we’ll go on a beachcombing adventure. Question of the day: “Who will find the largest/ strangest object”? At the end we’ll collect everything we have found. Like this we even leave the island behind a little cleaner then we have found it.
Meals: breakfast buffet
We are staying in cosy studios for two people in the middle of the island. The studios have a comfortable seating area, private shower and two single beds (bedding is provided). You will share a studio with one other person. There is a common area where we’ll have a delicious breakfast buffet with juices, bread rolls, yoghurt, cheese, ham, jam etc.
